SRCS 6/4/21 Update: Updated School Schedules for the 2021-22 School Year
Posted 6/4/21

Dear San Rafael City Schools Community,

When an ancient Greek philosopher said, "The only constant in life is change," I wonder if he had any idea how applicable it would be in the third decade of the 21st Century? Indeed, there has been so much change in our schools this past year and a half. As we move into next year, I am thrilled that it will be much more “normal” with full in-person learning for full school days for all students. With that said, we are going to have a significant change for many of our schools. Stay with me, please!

California has a new law (Senate Bill 328) that requires later start times for middle and high schools, which also presented us with an opportunity to determine if it makes sense to alter all our school schedules TK-12. We convened a Late Start Schedule Committee made up of a range of stakeholders to review and discuss the options, challenges and benefits for changing the regular school day start and end times. We also sent a survey to better understand families' feedback. Along the way, there was much consideration into some research regarding the late start bell schedules for older students, which clearly indicates the need for secondary students to get more sleep and have later start times. Another factor that we had to take into account is that it is important that we provide transportation to as many students as possible, and as efficiently as possible.

While the new law does not require middle or high school changes until the start of the 2022-23 school year, we are moving forward with a new schedule TK-12 beginning with the start of the upcoming 2021-22 school year. In all honesty, after a year with so many changes, we felt it makes most sense to take advantage of the timing and transition now and have one less change in the long run.

Having said all of this, I am pleased to share the updated school schedules for the 2021-22 school year in the tables below. We feel these changes are a balance of having middle and high school students start later; providing as much consistency as possible; and juggling all the parameters and feedback.

I realize that schedule changes impact our teachers, staff, families and students in different ways, and that some will be happy and others will be upset. We strived to look at the big picture and what is best for students as much as possible. Please also know that we are working with our partners to find solutions for before and after school care to help meet the needs of our families as much as we can. Please watch for more information from the District and school principals!

Sincerely,

Jim Hogeboom
Superintendent
